Behind the Scenes
I spent a lot of time thinking about the best way to structure and collect the data. At first, I considered using user likes as the primary source, since they're an active form of engagement. But after further analysis, I decided to prioritize Google Analytics tag views instead. They turned out to be more representative of actual user interest.
Don’t worry though — in the UI, you can switch between both metrics (likes vs views). In most cases, they show similar trends, but I believe views give a more objective picture of what's popular.
Also, instead of comparing all tags together, tags are now ranked within their own categories (Characters, Artists, Copyrights, etc.). This gives a much cleaner and more meaningful result.
How It Works
The system aggregates data over different time periods — year, month, week — and assigns ranks to tags based on views or likes.
This allows us to track how tag popularity shifts over time, and believe it or not — it actually reflects the real-world release cycle of games and anime. For example, the release of Hollow Knight: Silksong in September caused a noticeable spike in related tag ranks.
You can even pick a single tag and track its rank evolution across time!
Note: Due to changes in Google Analytics (Universal → GA4), data is only available starting from 2022.
The feature is currently available on Trends. It will be rolled out to all other sites in the future.
I hope you enjoy it — and if you have ideas or feedback, feel free to post in the general chat or message me directly.
P.S. As far as I know, no other site in this space has anything even close to this.
