Meta tags

TL;DR:
I’ve added computed meta tags to the site: best of the day / week / month / year. They are assigned automatically based on likes within fixed time windows and help highlight high-quality posts and authors. Currently available on rule34.xyz; coming to other sites before the New Year.
Hello @everyone.
I’ve started working on the next major task from the #polls feature vote — meta tags. Not everything is finished yet; I’ll continue working on this during winter. The scope turned out to be bigger than I initially expected.
I’m introducing a new site mechanic — meta tags. They are displayed in a separate color, are fully computed, and are assigned by background jobs.
The following meta tags are now available: best of the day, best of the week, best of the month, and best of the year. They work like regular tags and can be searched the same way. Below is how they are calculated:
- best of the day: Top 4% of posts (maximum 60). Posts that gained the most likes within 24 hours after publication. Each post is evaluated independently, so all posts from the same day have equal chances.
- best of the week: Top 2% of posts, maximum 210. Likes window: 7 days.
- best of the month: Top 1% of posts, maximum 450. Likes window: 14 days.
- best of the year: Top 0.5% of posts, maximum 1000. Likes window: 30 days.
Note: these thresholds were chosen subjectively and may be adjusted in the future.
To see the best posts of 2025, you’ll need to wait until February 1st, 2026, due to the 30-day likes window.
These meta tags help highlight quality. Some authors with few works consistently appear in best of the month, while others have many works but rarely appear there.
During winter, I’ll also work on additional meta tags, including aspect ratio tags and video duration tags.
At the time of writing, these changes are available only on rule34.xyz. They will be rolled out to the other sites before the New Year.
